Use It or Lose It!  Keeping Our Brains Healthy as We Age

Presented by Janet Meiselman, PsyD, Supervising Psychologist, Institute on Aging

What's good for the heart is good for the brain. It's possible to maintain brain health as we age by making smart lifestyle choices such as exercising regularly, eating antioxidant-rich foods, learning new things, reducing stress, and staying socially connected. Exercising our brains, challenging our minds, and toning up our dentrites (nerve extensions) as we move through mid-life and beyond is just as important as exercising our bodies. Stimulating the brain may slow down age-related cognitive decline and memory loss. The hippocampus — the area of the brain that is important in the acquisition of new memories and information — has the capacity to regenerate. This is important new information because there was a time when scientists believed that the brain was not capable of regeneration. In this lecture, you will hear about the latest research in brain health and overall well-being to help yourselves as well as those you serve.

Institute on Aging offers monthly scheduled trainings and case studies for professionals. Speakers cover topics ranging from how to communicate with clients suffering from dementia to understaning the role of spirituality when working with aging and disabled clients.
